Iran’s Supreme Leader names possible successors amid fears of Israeli or U.S. strike

The New York Times has reported that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has identified three senior clerics as potential successors amid growing fears of an Israeli or U.S. strike.

The 86-year-old leader, in power for over 36 years, has ceased all electronic communication due to heightened security threats and now only communicates through a trusted advisor. Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence has also reportedly banned senior officials and military commanders from using mobile phones and digital devices.

Notably, Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei—previously seen as a likely heir—is not amongst the three proposed candidates. Former President Ebrahim Raisi, once a strong contender, died in a helicopter crash in May 2024.

Khamenei, who holds ultimate authority over Iran’s military, judiciary, parliament, and executive, is considered one of the most powerful figures in the country.

Tehran has not officially responded to the report.
