Thousands of Prisoners Escape Amid Violent Protests
Nepal is facing severe unrest as violent anti-government protests have led to large-scale prison breaks across the country.

According to police officials, around 13,500 inmates escaped from different jails during clashes, while three police officers lost their lives in the violence. Videos circulating on social media showed hundreds of prisoners fleeing from Kathmandu’s Dilli Bazaar Jail as security forces struggled to stop them.

In many areas, police have withdrawn to their headquarters, leaving the army to patrol the streets of the capital. The Nepalese military has announced a curfew through loudspeakers in an attempt to restore order.

Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel has appealed to the public to end the protests and resolve issues through dialogue.

The unrest was sparked earlier this week after the government imposed restrictions on social media. The move triggered widespread demonstrations led by young people, who attempted to storm parliament. Clashes with police turned deadly, leaving several casualties.

As the crisis deepened, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli announced his resignation. However, despite the political change, protests have continued, with demonstrators attacking and vandalising government and private buildings.
