Trump announces 25% tariff and additional penalties on India

Washington: Former US President Donald Trump has once again criticised India and announced the imposition of a 25% tariff and additional penalties from August 1.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said while India is a friend, its high tariffs and non-monetary trade barriers have long restricted fair bilateral trade.
He also criticised India for being one of the largest buyers of Russian weapons and energy, second only to China, despite global pressure on Russia to end the Ukraine war.
Trump warned that if India does not agree to a fair trade deal with the U.S., the new tariffs will take effect. He claimed India imposes higher tariffs than nearly any other country, calling the situation “unacceptable.”
