Trump Seeks $6.4bn in Weapons for Israel: Sources

The Trump administration is seeking Congressional approval for a $6.4 billion arms package to support Israel’s military operations. The deal includes 30 AH-64 Apache helicopters and over 3,000 infantry assault vehicles. An additional $750 million in spare parts for armoured vehicles is also part of the package. This would be one of the largest U.S. military aid deals for Israel in recent years. The plan comes amid escalating violence in Gaza and rising international concern.
On Friday, Israel expanded military operations in Gaza City, targeting Hamas infrastructure. The bombings have intensified fears among civilians already displaced by the conflict. Many Palestinians say they have no safe place to flee. Israel insists the strikes are aimed at Hamas strongholds. However, humanitarian agencies report worsening conditions, with hospitals and shelters overwhelmed. The timing of the U.S. arms deal raises questions as civilian casualties continue to rise.
The weapons sale announcement comes just days before the United Nations General Assembly in New York. A high-level UN Security Council meeting on Gaza is also scheduled. World leaders are expected to address the humanitarian crisis and urge restraint. The White House has not yet commented on the arms deal report. The Wall Street Journal was the first to reveal the proposed sale on Friday.
Meanwhile, U.S. politics shows deepening divisions over Middle East policy. On Thursday, several Democratic senators introduced the first Senate resolution backing recognition of a Palestinian state. More than half of Senate Democrats recently opposed additional arms sales to Israel. They cite growing concern over civilian deaths and Israel’s military approach. This marks a major policy contrast with President Trump’s firm support for Israel.
As global attention shifts to the UN, the U.S. finds itself at a political crossroads. The proposed arms sale strengthens Israel militarily, but risks widening domestic and international backlash. Calls for a ceasefire and renewed diplomacy are growing louder. The coming days will test Washington’s ability to balance support for an ally with pressure to prevent further civilian suffering.
