Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has revealed that some US bombs in Iranian nuclear facilities failed to detonate during attacks in June 2025. These unexploded bombs remain inside the facilities, creating a serious safety and security risk for inspectors. This revelation highlights ongoing tensions and the challenges of monitoring Iran’s nuclear program.

According to Iranian officials, the bombs are still located in critical nuclear sites, including Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. These sites are central to Iran’s uranium enrichment and nuclear technology programs. Iran has stated that inspections cannot proceed until strict safety, security, and access protocols are agreed upon.

The US attacks involved B-2 strategic bombers carrying massive GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator bombs, each weighing around 13,600 kilograms. These weapons were designed to penetrate thick rock and reinforced concrete before exploding. In addition, Tomahawk cruise missiles were also launched at specific nuclear infrastructure targets.

Experts say that if the unexploded bombs include GBU-57s, inspecting them could allow Iran to study the technical design of these advanced bunker-buster weapons. Such analysis could examine the bomb’s shell thickness, metal composition, and penetration capabilities. It could also provide insight into the electronics, power systems, and navigation sensors used in these bombs.

The presence of US bombs in Iranian nuclear facilities remains a major security concern and a potential source of technical knowledge for Iran. Inspecting these unexploded weapons could give valuable information about modern bomb technology, but it also poses significant safety risks for personnel entering the affected sites.
