Victoria Moves to Make Work from Home a Legal Right
Victoria’s Premier Jacinta Allan has proposed a new law to make working from home a legal right. The plan allows employees to work remotely at least two days a week if their role permits. Allan announced the proposal at the Labor Party’s state conference, calling it a major shift in workplace rights.

She explained that working from home improves productivity and helps families save time and money. The policy could save workers around $110 weekly, she said. It also aims to reduce traffic congestion and support more women in the workforce by offering flexibility.

The new measure will enter a consultation phase with unions, employers, and workers. Allan emphasized the importance of carefully finalizing the details. She wants to ensure the plan meets the needs of all parties involved.

Opposition Leader Brad Battin expressed support for flexible work options. He noted that work-from-home setups had helped workers maintain better work-life balance. His remarks reflect a growing consensus across party lines.

During Australia’s national elections in May, remote work became a key issue. The opposition coalition’s plans to limit remote work hurt their performance. Many voters supported the continuation of flexible work practices.

If passed, the new law will come before Victoria’s state parliament next year. The policy marks a strong step toward modernizing employment rights and adapting to post-pandemic work culture.
