Water Flow Disrupted by Illegal Construction: FFC

The Chairman of the Federal Flood Commission (FFC) has said that construction in natural water routes is disrupting water flow. He shared this during a briefing to the National Assembly’s Committee for Water Resources. The official warned that bridges and new buildings have changed the flow pattern of rivers and streams. He stressed the need to upgrade flood mapping to reflect these changes. Poor planning and unchecked development have made flood management more difficult across the country.
Officials from the Ministry of Water Resources also explained the unusual behavior of the current flood. They said the water volume is high but flowing slowly. Normally, water takes 86 hours to travel from Qadir Abad to Trimmu. This time, it took only 12 hours. This sharp difference signals a change in river dynamics, likely caused by encroachments and development along water paths. Authorities are now reviewing their flood response strategies.
Committee member Shazia Marri criticized the Meteorological Department for failing to predict rainfall in time. She said the department only gave a warning a day before the rain. This lack of preparation added to the flood’s damage. Another member, Mir Munawar Talpur, also blamed illegal construction for worsening the crisis. He said people are building homes inside riverbeds, which blocks natural water routes and increases flood risks.
During the hearing, officials explained how decisions are made to breach protective embankments. They said a special committee, led by the deputy commissioner, makes the final call. This group includes representatives from all relevant departments. However, Shazia Marri disagreed and said such decisions should not rest with just one local official. She demanded stronger oversight and accountability in flood management.
In conclusion, lawmakers and officials agreed that unregulated construction and poor planning have worsened flooding. The FFC urged immediate updates to flood maps and water flow models. Committee members called for better coordination between departments and timely weather forecasts. Without urgent action, the country may face more severe flooding in the future.
