Why didn’t break Brian Lara’s record? Wiaan Mulder reveals real reason

Bulawayo: South African captain Wiaan Mulder has explained why he chose not to break West Indies legend Brian Lara’s iconic 400-run record in Test cricket.

Speaking to commentator Shaun Pollock at the end of Day 2 of the second Test against Zimbabwe, Mulder said, “Brian Lara is a legend. He scored 400 not out against England, and I wanted that record to remain his. Even if I get the chance again, I’ll make the same decision.”

The 27-year-old admitted he never imagined scoring even a double century, let alone a triple. He described his innings as “very special” and said the decision to declare was made after consulting with the coach, keeping the team’s interest in mind.

At the time of the declaration, South Africa were 626/5, with Mulder unbeaten on 367 — just 33 runs short of breaking Lara’s 21-year-old record. The move surprised many fans who were hoping to witness a new milestone in Test cricket.
