5.7-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Bangladesh and Eastern India

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh and parts of eastern India on Friday morning, causing panic among residents. The quake hit at 10:38am local time, with its epicenter located 13km east of Dhaka, near the Agargaon Seismic Center. Despite the strong tremors, authorities in both countries reported no casualties or significant damage.
The earthquake was shallow, occurring at a depth of 10km, making the tremors widely felt. In Bangladesh, residents rushed out of buildings, reporting shaking walls and swaying fans. In Dhaka, some makeshift structures collapsed, but there were no reports of injuries. Fire service officials confirmed they had not received reports of major damage or casualties.
The tremors were also felt in parts of eastern India. In Kolkata, office workers evacuated buildings, and social media flooded with images of people gathering outside. Mild tremors were reported in several districts of West Bengal, as well as in Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram. In Guwahati, Assam, residents stepped outside as a precaution. Authorities in India confirmed that no major damage had occurred.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department confirmed the quake’s timing and location, while India’s National Center for Seismology also verified the event. Social media users in both countries shared videos of the tremors, showing widespread concern but no immediate harm. Authorities urged people to stay alert but noted that there was no need for further action.
Bangladesh is located in an active seismic zone, and while tremors are not uncommon, Friday’s earthquake reminded people of the region’s vulnerability. Both Bangladesh and India continue to monitor the situation, with no further developments reported so far.
