Punjab Home Department to Establish Central DNA Database for Crime Investigation

In a groundbreaking initiative, the Punjab Home Department has decided to set up a central DNA database across the province, a move aimed at enhancing crime investigations and justice delivery.
The Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) will oversee the collection of DNA records from various regions within Punjab. This comprehensive DNA database is expected to aid in the swift identification of suspects involved in serious criminal activities.
Additionally, it has been decided that DNA samples will be recorded from all prisoners in Punjab’s jails. Criminals and habitual offenders will also have their DNA profiles stored in the database, providing crucial information for future investigations.
The initiative is being led by Home Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal, who has formed a specialised working group of experts to devise a model for establishing the central DNA database. The working group will work towards improving the effectiveness of the justice system and enhancing the province’s law enforcement capabilities.
Dr Muhammad Amjad, Director General of the Punjab Forensic Science Agency, has been appointed as the head of the working group. Other members of the team include Waleed Baig, Director of Administration at PFSA; Professor Dr Muaz-ur-Rehman; and DIG Athar Waheed.
