NDMA Issues Nationwide Rain and Flood Alerts Amid Severe Weather Forecast

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a comprehensive weather alert, warning of potential rain, flash floods, and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) across various regions of Pakistan.
The alert highlights growing risks due to heavy rainfall and above-normal temperatures, particularly in the northern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, and the Kumrat Valley. These conditions have significantly raised the chances of flash floods, infrastructure damage, and mobility challenges.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, rapid snow and glacier melt paired with rainfall have increased the threat of GLOF events in high-altitude valleys. Authorities warn of potential river swelling, flash floods, and possible disruptions to transport and power infrastructure in the region.
Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) is also expected to face persistent rain that may lead to flooding in low-lying areas, drainage overload, and transportation delays.
In Punjab, widespread rain and thunderstorms are forecast, especially in Murree, Galiyat, and central districts. The NDMA cautions that these weather events may cause urban flooding, power outages, damage to vulnerable structures, and reduced visibility affecting traffic flow. The federal capital, Islamabad, is expected to experience similar conditions over the next 24 to 48 hours.
In Balochistan, isolated thunderstorms and strong winds are anticipated, posing a risk to weak infrastructure and leading to power disruptions and reduced visibility.
Sindh, particularly the districts of Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpur Khas, Tharparkar, Badin, Umerkot, and Jacobabad, is likely to experience widespread heavy rainfall. This could result in urban flooding, traffic chaos, and damage to buildings and electricity networks.
The NDMA has urged local authorities and the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions. Emergency services have been advised to stay prepared for potential response and relief efforts in vulnerable areas.
