Punjab Launches Crackdown on Inflammatory Social Media Posts Ahead of Muharram

Lahore: Punjab’s Home Department announced on Thursday that 932 social media links have been flagged for spreading provocative or sectarian content, as part of a broader campaign to maintain peace and security during Muharram.

According to a department spokesperson, a total of 74 individuals have already been arrested for sharing inflammatory material online. The cyber patrolling cell, which was established to monitor online activity, is actively scanning digital platforms for content that may incite religious hatred or unrest.

“The government is enforcing a zero-tolerance policy toward any posts that promote sectarianism or violence,” the spokesperson said. “Immediate action is being taken against users spreading religious hatred.”

Citizens have been urged to refrain from sharing any sectarian content or unverified information that could disturb public order, especially during the sacred Islamic month.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari, in a press conference earlier in Lahore, echoed this warning. She stated that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has issued strict orders for authorities to act swiftly against anyone misusing social media platforms during Muharram.

“A special cyber security task force is working alongside the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to monitor digital activity,” Bokhari said. “Those found guilty of posting fake news or inciting content will face legal action, including account suspensions and criminal prosecution.”
