E-Challan Calls It Looting Tactic

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi leader Munem Zafar Khan has strongly criticized the Sindh government’s newly launched E-Challan system. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Zafar called the system a “new tactic of looting Karachiites.” He argued that the E-Challan initiative is an injustice to the city’s residents, especially since it was introduced without addressing Karachi’s crumbling road infrastructure.

Zafar pointed out that the Sindh government has failed to improve the city’s roads but is now imposing hefty fines. He noted that Karachi’s roads are in a poor condition, often worse than rural “Katcha” areas. He questioned the logic of imposing high fines when the city’s basic infrastructure remains neglected.

The JI leader also compared the new fines with those in other regions, claiming that fines in Karachi were “ten times higher than in Punjab.” He described the system as “a business of looting,” claiming it was more about generating revenue than improving road safety. Zafar argued that traffic accidents are rising, but the government believes E-Challans will solve the issue.

Zafar further criticized the Sindh government for adding financial burdens on citizens already struggling with high utility bills. “People have no electricity, gas, or water, yet they are being slapped with heavy fines,” he said. He demanded that the government focus on improving road conditions before implementing such systems.

The E-Challan system generated over Rs 12.5 million in fines within just six hours of its launch. A total of 2,662 tickets were issued for various traffic violations, including speeding, lane violations, and not wearing seatbelts. DIG Traffic Syed Pir Muhammad Shah praised the system, calling it a significant step toward better traffic law enforcement and road safety in Karachi.

Karachi traffic police have introduced a new electronic challan (e-challan) system to tackle traffic violations. The system uses CCTV cameras to detect rule-breaking in real time. Violators will receive automatic fines at their registered addresses. Authorities believe this will help improve road safety and enforce better traffic discipline across the city. Citizens can also check challan details through a mobile app.

At a seminar in Karachi, IG Sindh urged people to respect traffic laws for everyone’s safety. DIG Traffic said the e-challan system would reduce road accidents. He added that strict enforcement could save lives and ease traffic congestion. Officials also said this move is part of a broader traffic reform plan. They stressed the need for public cooperation to make it successful.
