UNICEF warns of high HIV infection rates among young women and girls

United Nations: UNICEF has raised alarms over the high rate of HIV infections among young women and girls, warning that many of them lack access to prevention and treatment services.
According to recent media reports, UNICEF highlighted the alarming prevalence of HIV among women and adolescent girls, noting that they often do not have the necessary resources for prevention and treatment. The organisation’s report revealed that in 2023, 96,000 girls and 41,000 boys aged 15-19 were infected with HIV, with girls making up 70% of the cases.
In Africa, the situation is even more concerning, with 9 out of every 10 new HIV infections among young people aged 15-19 being found in girls.
UNICEF’s HIV/AIDS Associate Director, Anureeta Bains, emphasised that children and adolescents are not fully benefiting from available prevention and treatment services. She urged for increased investment in resources and prioritising the availability of treatment for children living with HIV.
The organisation’s warning comes as global efforts to curb the spread of HIV face significant challenges, particularly among vulnerable groups such as young women and girls. UNICEF stressed the need for greater focus on ensuring equitable access to care and prevention for all.
