ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced the resumption of granting Class Licences for Data Services, allowing service providers to offer data services across Pakistan. According to a PTA news release, VPN service providers will now be required to obtain a Class Licence for Data (Data Services) to offer Virtual Private Network (VPN) and related services.

The PTA clarified that this move applies specifically to data services and does not include the provision of Internet services. Additionally, local loop licensees, who already provide telecommunication services, will be permitted to offer VPN services, provided they obtain prior permission from the PTA.

This step is in line with PTA’s ongoing efforts to enhance Pakistan’s digital ecosystem, ensuring a secure, transparent, and innovative environment while protecting the interests of users and stakeholders. The PTA emphasised that this initiative reflects its commitment to regulating and fostering the growth of the country’s digital infrastructure.
