T20 World Cup safety alarm as Nipah spreads in India

India is under criticism for allegedly hiding the severity of a Nipah virus outbreak ahead of the T20 World Cup. Official reports mention only two cases in West Bengal since December 2025. Independent sources, however, confirm at least five hospital-linked infections in Kolkata, including healthcare workers.

The Nipah virus is highly lethal, with a fatality rate of 40–75 percent. Experts warn that underreporting endangers players, officials, and fans. Authorities appear to downplay the outbreak to maintain the appearance of control ahead of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Concerns are rising because some cricket venues, including Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, are near outbreak areas. Past events show India struggles with sanitation and safety. The 2026 India Open Super 750 badminton tournament exposed unsafe conditions, including dirty halls, stray animals, extreme cold, and polluted air.

Players and spectators face unnecessary risks if matches continue in India. Critics argue hosting the T20 World Cup prioritizes revenue and appearances over safety. The ICC is urged to move all matches to Sri Lanka, which reportedly has better facilities and stronger health monitoring.

Continuing the tournament in India could endanger lives and set a dangerous international precedent. Experts call for immediate action to protect players, staff, and fans. Relocating the event now would ensure the World Cup proceeds safely without compromising public health.
