Iran will play World Cup matches in US as planned: Fifa president

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will play its scheduled World Cup matches in the United States despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The decision comes after the Iranian Football Federation requested a venue change, proposing that its group-stage matches be moved to Mexico due to security concerns linked to the current regional conflict. However, Infantino dismissed the possibility of relocation, stating that matches would proceed “according to the draw.”

Iran is set to play its Group G fixtures in cities including Los Angeles and Seattle, facing Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand during the tournament. The team has been preparing in a training camp in Antalya, Türkiye, where Infantino met players and coaching staff during a visit.

The issue gained attention after Iranian authorities restricted sports teams from traveling to countries they consider hostile. At the same time, US President Donald Trump commented on the situation, suggesting that while Iran’s team would be allowed to compete, safety concerns should be considered.

Infantino expressed confidence in the arrangements and pledged full support to the Iranian squad in the lead-up to the tournament. He also offered assistance for training camps and logistical matters outside Iran.

Meanwhile, squad selection has also drawn scrutiny, with striker Sardar Azmoun reportedly omitted from the training camp following controversy over a social media post.

The World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19. Despite political tensions, organizers appear determined to keep the tournament plans unchanged.
