All eyes on Islamabad as Iran–US talks face critical test

Islamabad has emerged as the focal point of global diplomacy as Pakistan prepares to host the second round of high-stakes negotiations between Iran and the United States, with a fragile ceasefire nearing its expiration and uncertainty still surrounding Tehran’s participation.

According to officials, preparations are underway for talks involving delegations led by US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher-Ghalibaf, although Iran has not yet formally confirmed its attendance. Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting confirmed that Islamabad is still awaiting a response from Tehran regarding its participation.

The diplomatic effort follows weeks of intense regional tensions that escalated earlier this year, prompting Pakistan to step in as a mediator. The first round of talks, held in Islamabad, ended without a final agreement but succeeded in extending a temporary ceasefire, keeping dialogue channels open.

Experts say the stakes are exceptionally high. A successful outcome could stabilise energy markets and reduce regional tensions, while failure could trigger renewed escalation, with global economic consequences. Analysts also note that Pakistan’s diplomatic standing is closely tied to the outcome, as its mediation efforts are being closely watched internationally.

Despite uncertainty, Pakistan continues to push for dialogue, hoping to convert fragile engagement into a sustained diplomatic process that can prevent further conflict in an already volatile region.
