A woman in Mandi Bahauddin’s Maari Lak area has alleged that she was subjected to severe physical abuse and illegal confinement by her husband and in-laws, who also allegedly took away her jewellery and passport, police said on Tuesday.

According to police, a case has been registered at Jhal Chakian police station against the woman’s husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law on charges of assault and unlawful detention. Investigators have begun proceedings against the nominated suspects following the formal complaint.

The complainant stated in her statement that she had travelled from Italy to Sargodha on 13 September 2025 along with her husband and son in an attempt to continue her married life in Pakistan. However, she alleged that soon after her arrival, she was confined inside the house by her in-laws for several months and subjected to repeated physical violence.

She further claimed that her jewellery and passport were taken away, restricting her ability to seek help or return abroad. The woman said she initially remained silent in an effort to preserve her household, but later approached the police after allegedly enduring prolonged mistreatment.

Police officials confirmed that the case has been registered under relevant sections of law and that statements are being recorded as part of the ongoing investigation. They added that the accused individuals have been named in the FIR and will be questioned as part of the inquiry process.

Authorities said further action will depend on the outcome of the investigation and the evidence collected. No arrests have been officially confirmed at this stage. The case has drawn attention to ongoing concerns about domestic violence reporting and protection mechanisms for women, particularly those returning from abroad. Police have assured that the matter will be handled according to legal procedures.
