Rising gold prices reshape traditional wedding trends in South Asia

Gold prices rise in Pakistan

Soaring gold prices across South Asia are significantly changing traditional wedding customs, making it increasingly difficult for families to purchase pure gold jewellery for brides.

According to media reports, record-high gold prices in countries such as Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh have placed financial pressure on middle-class families, forcing many to rethink long-standing wedding traditions that heavily rely on gold jewellery as a symbol of status and cultural value.

As a result, many brides are now opting for imitation jewellery instead of real gold sets, as families look for more affordable alternatives to manage wedding expenses. In addition, lightweight and single-gram gold jewellery has emerged as a popular substitute, offering a compromise between tradition and affordability.

The rising cost of gold has also led to a noticeable decline in jewellery purchases across the region. Analysts note that gold is increasingly being viewed less as a decorative wedding necessity and more as a financial investment asset, rather than a cultural requirement for marriage ceremonies.

In Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, jewellers report a drop in consumer demand for heavy gold sets traditionally gifted during weddings. Instead, buyers are shifting towards minimal designs, artificial jewellery, or small gold pieces that fit within tighter budgets.

Experts say this shift reflects broader economic pressures and changing consumer behaviour in South Asia, where inflation and rising commodity prices are influencing lifestyle and cultural practices.

While weddings remain a major cultural event in the region, the emphasis is gradually moving away from traditional gold-heavy customs toward more practical and cost-effective arrangements, marking a significant transformation in social traditions.
