Israel Appoints First Ambassador to Somaliland Amid Recognition

Israel appointed its first ambassador to the self-declared state of Somaliland after establishing diplomatic relations. The move marks a new step in Israel’s foreign policy. It also highlights growing engagement between the two sides following earlier diplomatic recognition.

According to Israeli media, the government approved the appointment of the first ambassador to Somaliland. Officials described the decision as an important development. It aims to expand cooperation and strengthen newly established bilateral ties.

Furthermore, Israel appointed Michael Lotem as its first ambassador to Somaliland. He currently serves as Israel’s economic representative for Africa. In addition, he has previously worked as ambassador to Kenya, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan, bringing strong diplomatic experience.

Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced in December 2025 that Israel recognized Somaliland as an independent state. However, many Muslim countries rejected the move and expressed serious concern over Israel’s decision.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 after a civil war. It operates with de facto autonomy but lacks broad international recognition.
