Man in India takes remains to bank over ₹19,000 withdrawal dispute

A shocking incident from Odisha has emerged in which a man reportedly exhumed his sister’s remains and took them to a bank in an attempt to prove her death and withdraw money from her account.
According to Indian media reports, the incident took place in Dyanali village, where a man identified as Jitu Munda attempted to access funds belonging to his deceased sister, Kalara Munda. The sister had deposited ₹19,300 in a regional rural bank account.
Reports state that Kalara Munda had passed away around two months ago. Her husband and only child had also previously died, leaving Jitu as her sole surviving relative.
When Jitu approached the bank to withdraw the money, the branch manager reportedly instructed him to either present the account holder or provide an official death certificate along with legal proof of inheritance.

According to reports, Jitu did not possess the required documentation and was also unaware of the legal process needed to claim the funds. Frustrated and unable to navigate the formal requirements, he allegedly returned to his village.
He later exhumed his sister’s grave, retrieved her remains, wrapped them in cloth, and carried them to the bank to prove her death. The incident caused panic and chaos among bank staff and visitors.
Authorities have since taken notice of the situation, and an investigation is expected to determine both the actions of the individual and the procedural issues that led to the incident.
The case has sparked widespread shock and debate over administrative barriers and lack of awareness regarding legal banking procedures in rural areas.
