Dubai sets up monitoring unit for bicycles and e-scooters

Authorities in Dubai have established a new monitoring unit to oversee the growing use of bicycles and electric scooters across the city, following a sharp rise in their popularity in recent years.
According to officials, the move aims to improve road safety and regulate the increasing number of cyclists and e-scooter users on public roads and designated lanes.
As part of the new regulations, wearing a helmet and a reflective jacket has been made mandatory for all cyclists. Authorities said these safety measures are intended to reduce accidents and enhance visibility, especially during night-time travel.
For electric scooter users, strict rules have also been introduced. Riding with more than one passenger on a single e-scooter has been prohibited. In addition, the minimum age requirement for operating an e-scooter has been set at 16 years.
Officials further announced that the maximum speed limit for e-scooters will be restricted to 20 kilometres per hour. The decision is part of broader efforts to ensure safer integration of micro-mobility transport into Dubai’s urban infrastructure.
The newly formed monitoring unit will oversee compliance with these rules and take action against violations. Authorities stated that the initiative reflects Dubai’s commitment to promoting modern, sustainable transport options while maintaining public safety.
In recent years, bicycles and e-scooters have become increasingly popular in Dubai as Eco-friendly and convenient transport alternatives, particularly for short-distance travel within urban areas.
Officials believe that the new regulations will help balance convenience with safety, ensuring that all road users can benefit from improved traffic management and reduced accident risks.
