Sindh High Court to hear appeal in Mehar triple murder case

The Sindh High Court on Tuesday approved a plea to hear the appeal against the verdict in the high-profile Mehar triple murder case in Karachi.
Petitioner Umme Rubab Chandio confirmed that the chief justice allowed the appeal to be heard in Karachi due to security concerns. She stated that the case now represents not just her family but all oppressed people in Sindh.
Umme Rubab Chandio had earlier approached the high court along with her legal counsel to challenge the verdict issued by a model court in Dadu. On March 30, the court had acquitted all eight accused in the case, including influential political figures.

The incident dates back to January 17, 2018, when armed attackers stormed a house in Mehar and killed three members of the Chandio family. The victims included Raees Karamullah Chandio, then chairman of the Baldia Union Council, along with his two sons — Mukhtiar Chandio, a district council member, and another son associated with the Tumandar Council.
Among those acquitted were leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party, including Sardar Ahmed Chandio and his brother Burhan Chandio, as well as several others.
According to the petitioner, the killings were allegedly carried out on the orders of Sardar Ahmed Chandio and his brother. Despite facing reported threats, Umme Rubab Chandio has continued to pursue justice for her family.
The case drew nationwide attention in 2021 after a video of her walking barefoot out of a courtroom went viral, highlighting her struggle for justice. She had also accused the Sindh government of protecting those involved.
With the appeal now admitted, the high court is expected to re-examine the case, raising hopes for a fresh legal review in one of Sindh’s most widely discussed murder cases.
