Workers’ Day is being observed across Pakistan and around the world today, drawing attention to the challenges faced by the labour force, including rising inflation, unemployment, and low wages.

Despite being a day meant to honour workers’ contributions, many labourers continue to spend the day searching for daily wage opportunities instead of taking rest. For a large segment of the working class, economic pressures have made it difficult to pause work even on a day dedicated to them.

In Pakistan, the situation reflects broader socio-economic challenges where workers are struggling to cope with increasing living costs. Many labourers report that stagnant wages are no longer sufficient to meet basic household expenses, particularly amid rising inflation and limited employment opportunities.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a message acknowledging the role of workers in sustaining the economy. He said that the sacrifices of the working class keep daily life running smoothly and highlighted the importance of skilled labour both within the country and abroad.

He added that skilled workers and labourers represent Pakistan’s capability, hard work, and professional expertise on the global stage. The Prime Minister also called for renewed commitment to protecting the rights of workers and improving their welfare.

Labour rights groups and social observers, however, continue to stress that practical improvements are needed in wages, workplace safety, and access to social protection. They argue that symbolic recognition must be matched with structural reforms to address long-standing inequalities faced by workers.

As the day is marked globally, the contrast between celebration and reality remains evident, with millions of workers still striving for economic stability and dignity in their daily lives.
