Maryam Nawaz approves design of Gujranwala mass transit system

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the design of the Gujranwala Mass Transit System and directed that all areas of the city be connected to the metro train network through feeder bus services.
During a high-level meeting chaired by the chief minister, it was decided to include two tunnel sections in the project to improve traffic flow. The meeting also granted in-principle approval for 17 to 19 kilometres of the metro line to be constructed underground.
Officials briefed the meeting that the mass transit system is being developed to cater to an estimated 2.6 million passengers in Gujranwala. The project will span 31.5 kilometres, running from Gakkhar to Eminabad, and is expected to be completed within 12 months.
The plan includes a total of 24 stations, out of which two will be underground. Additionally, depots will be established in Gharjakh, Chen da Qila, and Gondlanwala to support operations and maintenance.
A key feature of the project is the installation of solar energy systems at all stations and depots to promote sustainable and cost-efficient operations.
Authorities also revealed that a 62-kilometre-long drainage system will be constructed along both sides of the route to improve infrastructure resilience and urban planning. A modern command and control centre will also be established to monitor operations and ensure efficient management of the transit system.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said the project would bring a significant transformation to the city’s transport system and provide citizens with modern, safe, and high-quality travel facilities.
She emphasized that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving public transport infrastructure and easing daily commuting challenges for residents of Gujranwala.
