Iran envoy sees new regional alliances after US-Israel war

Iran’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr Reza Amiri Moghadam, has said the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel could reshape regional politics and lead to the emergence of new political alignments in the Middle East and South Asia.
Speaking at a roundtable discussion hosted by the Centre for International Strategic Studies (CISS) in Islamabad, the Iranian envoy said Tehran views its relationship with Pakistan as a top regional priority despite maintaining ties with other countries, including India.
The event brought together diplomats, academics and policy experts to discuss Pakistan-Iran relations and the changing regional landscape amid what participants described as a fragile ceasefire in the ongoing conflict.
Dr Moghadam suggested the war could result in reduced US influence in the region and further diplomatic isolation for Israel. He also expressed optimism about the possibility of stronger regional cooperation after the conflict, mentioning the potential for a broader alliance involving Iran, Pakistan, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
The envoy thanked Pakistan for what he described as continued support during difficult times and acknowledged Islamabad’s role in facilitating diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran. He also reiterated that Iran would never allow its territory to be used against Pakistan.
Former ambassador Asif Durrani, speaking at the session, said Pakistan’s Gwadar Port and Iran’s Chabahar Port should be considered complementary projects rather than rivals. He noted that Gwadar could play a major role in regional connectivity and trade integration.
Durrani added that Pakistan’s diplomatic strategy aims to maintain balanced relations with both the United States and Iran while supporting de-escalation efforts and long-term regional stability.
Professor Dr Nazir Hussain highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties between Pakistan and Iran, stating that both countries still have significant untapped potential for cooperation in trade, energy and connectivity.
CISS Executive Director Ambassador Ali Sarwar Naqvi also said Pakistan had played a constructive role in facilitating the April ceasefire and subsequent diplomatic talks between the US and Iran.
