Trump arrives in China for high-stakes talks with Xi

Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for his first visit to China in nearly a decade, aiming to strengthen trade relations while navigating tensions over Taiwan, Iran, and strategic competition between the world’s two largest economies.
The visit marks Trump’s first official trip to China since 2017 and includes high-level meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled over two days. The itinerary features formal talks, a state banquet, and diplomatic receptions as both sides seek to manage increasingly complex bilateral relations.
Before departing Washington, Trump said he expected extensive discussions with Xi on Iran, noting that China remains the largest buyer of Iranian oil despite US sanctions. While acknowledging differences between the two countries, Trump described Xi as “relatively good” regarding the issue and suggested he preferred a peaceful resolution.

Taiwan is also expected to feature prominently in the talks after Trump indicated earlier this week that he planned to discuss US arms sales to the self-governing island claimed by China. The comments drew attention because Washington has traditionally avoided publicly framing such decisions as matters for consultation with Beijing.
Trade issues remain another central focus of the summit. Discussions are likely to cover tariffs, market access, and China’s export controls on rare earth materials, which are critical for global technology and manufacturing industries.
Security in Beijing was visibly heightened ahead of the visit, with police monitoring major intersections and conducting identity checks on metro passengers.
Despite years of trade tensions, both countries are currently observing a temporary tariff truce reached during Trump and Xi’s previous meeting in South Korea. Analysts say the outcome of the Beijing summit could significantly shape future economic and geopolitical relations between the United States and China.
