Afghanistan Quake Kills Eight as Tremors Felt Across Region

At least eight people lost their lives and a child was injured after a house collapsed in Kabul following a strong earthquake that struck the region on Friday, according to disaster management officials.
The earthquake, measuring 5.9 in magnitude, originated in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences. The tremor occurred at a considerable depth, which contributed to its wide reach across neighboring areas.
Shaking was felt not only in Kabul but also in Islamabad and New Delhi, raising concern among residents across the region. Authorities in Pakistan confirmed that the quake was recorded late in the evening, with its epicenter located within Afghan territory.
Strong 6.1 Earthquake Shakes Islamabad, Peshawar and Northern Regions
Despite the intensity of the tremors, no major damage or casualties were reported in Pakistan. However, several cities across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir experienced noticeable shaking, prompting people to evacuate buildings as a precaution.
In Afghanistan, the impact was more severe, particularly in areas with vulnerable infrastructure. Officials stated that the collapse of residential structures led to the reported fatalities and injuries.
Afghanistan remains highly susceptible to earthquakes due to its mountainous terrain and active fault lines. Seismic events frequently affect remote communities, where building standards and emergency response capabilities are limited.
The timing of the quake, during the evening when many families were gathered, added to the potential risk. Experts note that deeper earthquakes can still cause widespread tremors, even if surface damage varies.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess any further impact. The incident highlights the ongoing risk posed by natural disasters in the region and the importance of preparedness and resilient infrastructure.
