Australia has announced a historic leadership change in its defence forces, appointing Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as the country’s first female chief of army.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday as part of a broader reshuffle of senior military leadership. Coyle, currently serving as chief of joint capabilities, will assume her new role in July, replacing Lieutenant General Simon Stuart.

Describing the move as a milestone in the military’s 125-year history, Albanese said the appointment marks a significant step toward greater inclusion and representation within the armed forces. Defence Minister Richard Marles also termed it a “deeply historic moment,” highlighting its importance for women currently serving or considering a career in the military.

Coyle, 55, began her military career in 1987 and has since held a range of senior command positions. Her elevation comes as the Australian Defence Force (ADF) seeks to increase female participation and address longstanding concerns about workplace culture.

The ADF has faced allegations of systemic sexual harassment, discrimination and assault in recent years, including a class action lawsuit filed in 2025. Officials say leadership changes and diversity goals are part of broader reforms aimed at improving institutional accountability and inclusivity.

Currently, women make up about 21 percent of the ADF workforce and 18.5 percent of senior leadership roles. The military has set a target to raise overall female participation to 25 percent by 2030.

In related changes, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond has been appointed chief of the ADF, replacing Admiral David Johnston. Rear Admiral Matthew Buckley will succeed Hammond as head of the Navy.

The reshuffle reflects Australia’s push to modernise its defence leadership while promoting diversity and institutional reform.
