A tragic incident of honour killing in Charsadda has left a young woman and a man dead after they were shot by a relative in the jurisdiction of Thana Prang, police said.

According to law enforcement officials, the incident took place in the Mian Kaly area, where the accused uncle allegedly suspected that his niece was involved in an “illicit relationship” with a local young man. Acting on this suspicion, the man opened fire and killed his niece on the spot. He then targeted and killed the young man as well.

Police confirmed that the accused fled the scene immediately after the incident. Two separate FIRs have been registered, and investigations are underway to trace and arrest the suspect.

Authorities described the case as another example of violence driven by so-called honour-related motives, a recurring issue in several parts of the country. Such incidents often stem from personal disputes, social pressures and deeply rooted cultural attitudes, despite increasing legal and social awareness campaigns against honour killings.

Local residents expressed shock over the double murder, saying the killings created fear and grief in the community. Police teams have launched search operations in surrounding areas and are questioning possible witnesses to determine the exact sequence of events. Officials said that evidence collection is ongoing and forensic teams are also being involved to strengthen the investigation. Law enforcement has assured that the suspect will be arrested soon and brought to justice.

Human rights advocates continue to stress the need for stricter enforcement of laws and faster prosecution in honour killing cases, arguing that delays in justice often allow perpetrators to escape accountability or receive social protection. The incident adds to a troubling pattern of honour-based violence in the region, highlighting the ongoing challenge for authorities to curb such crimes and protect vulnerable individuals from lethal family disputes.
