At the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar underscored the vast economic potential of South Asia, stressing that the region continues to underperform due to weak integration and limited trade cooperation.

Speaking at the forum, Dar noted that South Asia, with a population of nearly two billion people, has a combined GDP of around four trillion dollars. Despite its size and resources, the region has yet to fully capitalise on its economic capacity due to inadequate connectivity and fragmented trade frameworks.

He emphasised the urgent need for stronger regional linkages, including improved transport systems and structured trade agreements, to unlock growth opportunities. Dar highlighted Pakistan’s strategic geographic position, saying it is well-placed to serve as a key transit hub connecting regional economies.

The deputy prime minister also pointed out that ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly between Iran and the United States, have negatively impacted trade flows and economic activity across the region. He added that Pakistan has consistently supported diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and promoting dialogue.

Dar described Pakistan’s role in facilitating talks between Iran and the United States as a positive development, expressing optimism over recent progress after decades of strained relations. He said such diplomatic engagement is essential for ensuring long-term regional stability.

Welcoming recent ceasefire-related progress, Dar noted the reopening of key maritime routes as a constructive step for global trade. He added that even limited agreements between Washington and Tehran would contribute positively to peace and economic stability.

He concluded by reiterating that enhanced cooperation among South Asian countries is crucial for achieving sustainable development and fully realising the region’s economic potential.
