FIFA has made a historic decision by allowing an Afghan refugee women’s team to compete globally. This move marks a major step toward inclusion in international football. It also offers new opportunities for displaced athletes.
The team consists of Afghan women who left their country nearly five years ago. They relocated after major political changes under the Taliban government. Despite challenges, they continued training and playing football while living abroad.
During a council meeting in Vancouver, Canada, FIFA approved changes to its rules. These changes allow the recognition of special teams in exceptional situations. As a result, the Afghan Women United team received official status.

Furthermore, FIFA used its authority to register the team under unique conditions. It granted them recognition as Afghanistan’s official national women’s team. This decision allows them to compete in international matches for the first time.
