Security forces in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province have foiled an attempted infiltration by more than 100 militants in the Hangu district, police officials said on Friday.

According to police, the attempted incursion was carried out by what authorities described as “Fitna al-Khawarij” elements. The operation was jointly conducted by police, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), and other security agencies, who successfully repelled the attackers and cleared nearby schools, civilian properties, and surrounding mountainous areas.

Officials said the militants launched mortar shell attacks during the confrontation, resulting in civilian casualties. At least six people were killed and 13 others injured when shells landed in residential areas. Security sources added that the attackers later retrieved the bodies of their dead comrades and evacuated wounded fighters while retreating from the area.

Following the operation, Inspector General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Zulfiqar Hameed praised the responding personnel for their quick action and coordination. He announced awards and commendation certificates for officers involved in the operation, calling it a successful defensive response against a serious threat.

The IG said the provincial police force, in coordination with other security institutions, has the capability to fully eliminate militant networks operating in the region. He reaffirmed that protecting civilian lives and maintaining law and order remains the top priority, and assured that no effort or sacrifice would be spared in this regard.

Authorities further stated that clearance operations in the surrounding areas have been completed, and security remains on high alert to prevent any further attempts of infiltration or attacks.

The incident highlights continuing security challenges in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where law enforcement agencies regularly conduct counterterrorism operations to maintain stability in border and mountainous regions.
