Reports from international media outlets indicate that the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), which originated in China, is rapidly spreading to other countries, including India, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Greece, and Singapore.

Health experts have raised concerns as the virus primarily targets children, though it is not considered highly dangerous. Experts suggest that while the virus poses a low risk for severe illnesses, efforts to contain its spread are essential, especially for individuals with weakened immune systems.

The virus has mostly affected children under the age of five and elderly individuals over the age of 65. It is also possible to contract the virus multiple times throughout life.

Experts emphasize that it is not uncommon for children to be affected by HMPV. Research shows that nearly every child will encounter the virus at least once by the age of five.

Professor Paul Hunter from the University of East Anglia in the UK stated that HMPV presence in children is generally not alarming and that there is no need for excessive concern.

Typically, HMPV causes respiratory infections, presenting as symptoms such as cough and cold. However, the virus often passes through children’s systems without causing any severe effects.
