Italy Sets Conditions for Recognizing Palestine

Italy has linked its recognition of Palestine as an independent state with strict conditions, while France has gone ahead with official recognition, joining a growing list of Western nations.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that her government would only recognise Palestine if all Israeli hostages are released and if Hamas has no role in the future Palestinian administration. According to her, international pressure should be directed at Hamas, not Israel, since, in her view, Hamas triggered the conflict and continues to obstruct peace by holding captives.

In contrast, France has formally recognised the State of Palestine. French President Emmanuel Macron made the announcement during the UN General Assembly, and in a symbolic gesture, both Palestinian and Israeli flags were displayed on the Eiffel Tower.

France’s decision follows similar moves by the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Portugal. Earlier, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer had confirmed his government’s recognition of Palestine through a video message shared on social media.

The diverging positions highlight divisions within Europe and the wider international community over the path to peace in the Middle East. While some countries argue recognition will strengthen Palestinian political legitimacy, others insist conditions must be met before full diplomatic recognition is granted.
