Karachi K‑2 water line repair

Karachi-Emergency repair work on Karachi’s K-2 water line has officially begun at the North East Pumping Station after a major leak was discovered in the 48-inch-diameter primary supply pipeline, according to officials from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC).

The Karachi K-2 water line repair effort comes in response to a rupture that threatened to significantly disrupt the city’s water distribution system. KWSC confirmed that the affected section of the K-2 pipeline is undergoing urgent valve replacement and structural reinforcement to prevent similar failures in the future.

Partial Shutdown Lowers Water Supply by 150 Million Gallons Daily

As part of the repair operations, three out of eleven pumps at the K-2 Pumping Station have been taken offline. In addition, one pump at the Dhabeji Pumping Station has also been shut down for related maintenance. These combined shutdowns are causing a reduction of approximately 150 million gallons per day (MGD) in the city’s water output.

Karachi typically receives around 650 MGD under normal operations. With the current disruption, the supply has dropped to an estimated 500 MGD, increasing the likelihood of temporary shortages in multiple districts.

Areas Likely to Face Water Shortages

According to the latest update from KWSC, the following areas are expected to experience intermittent or low water pressure during the repair period:

  • Gulberg

  • Liaquatabad

  • North Nazimabad

  • Gulshan-e-Iqbal

  • Parts of Safora Town

Residents of these areas are advised to store water in advance and use it efficiently until the K-2 line is fully restored.

24/7 Emergency Repair Work in Progress

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation has deployed emergency teams working in 24-hour rotating shifts to complete the repair work in the shortest time possible. The corporation stated that this is part of a larger effort to modernize and stabilize Karachi’s aging water infrastructure.

“This is a high-priority operation. Our teams are on-site around the clock, replacing damaged valves and pipeline sections,” said a KWSC spokesperson.
“We are doing everything possible to restore supply and minimize disruption.”

The corporation also emphasized the importance of the repair, stating that long-term reliability of Karachi’s water supply depends on maintaining key components like the K-2 mainline.

Karachi’s Water Infrastructure Faces Mounting Pressure

Karachi has long struggled with water infrastructure issues, including aging pipelines, illegal connections, and limited investment in upgrades. The current emergency highlights the vulnerability of the system and the need for proactive maintenance and expansion, particularly in light of increasing urban demand.

Projects like the K-IV water supply scheme are expected to help meet future needs, but delays in their completion mean that pipelines like K-2 remain critical to the city’s current water stability.

What Citizens Should Do

To manage the temporary shortfall, KWSC has issued the following public guidelines:

  • Store enough water for at least 2–3 days.

  • Avoid wastage by minimizing unnecessary usage.

  • Use water-efficient appliances and restrict car washing, gardening, and other high-consumption activities.

  • Report visible leakages or illegal connections to the KWSC helpline.

“Public cooperation is essential. By conserving water during this repair period, we can reduce the impact on everyone,” said the KWSC.
