KP governor proposes easing lockdown restrictions in province

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has proposed ending lockdown-style business restrictions in the province, similar to measures recently adopted in Punjab and Sindh, according to an official statement issued on Friday.

The proposal came during a telephone conversation between Governor Kundi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. During the discussion, the governor suggested relaxing restrictions on the operating hours of shops, markets, and shopping malls in order to reduce the financial burden on traders and businesses.

According to the Governor House statement, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi agreed with the suggestions presented during the conversation. Both leaders also discussed the overall situation in the province and exchanged views on issues affecting the public.

Governor Kundi said easing market timings would help limit economic losses faced by traders and business owners, particularly amid ongoing economic pressures. He emphasized that providing relief to citizens should remain the government’s top priority.

The discussion comes after Punjab lifted restrictions on business timings until June 1, allowing commercial activities to continue beyond the previously imposed 8pm limit. The Sindh government has also withdrawn lockdown-related measures introduced earlier under an austerity campaign.

Officials believe similar relaxations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could support local businesses, improve market activity, and reduce financial strain on small traders. However, authorities have not yet announced a formal policy decision regarding revised operating hours or the complete removal of restrictions.

The provincial government is expected to review the proposal in consultation with relevant departments before making a final decision.

The move reflects growing pressure from business communities across the country for greater economic flexibility as authorities attempt to balance public concerns with economic recovery efforts.
