Bilawal Calls PPP CEC

ISLAMABAD: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi addressed the media on Tuesday, providing updates on the 27th constitutional amendment. He stated that only an outline of the amendment has been prepared so far. However, discussions on the amendment will take place in the upcoming sessions of the National Assembly and the Senate.

Kundi expressed hope that the new Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would focus on the province’s development projects. He also recalled the previous Chief Minister’s intention to exert influence over Islamabad. The Governor emphasized the importance of addressing the province’s local issues rather than broader political concerns.

Regarding the 27th amendment, Kundi confirmed that he did not have the official draft. He noted that the amendment would be discussed during the People’s Party’s central executive committee meeting on November 6. The PPP’s leadership will decide on its position regarding the amendment during this session.

Kundi also commented on the meeting between the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan in jail. He referred to the matter as a court issue, suggesting it was not a topic for political discussion at this time. This statement followed questions about the recent developments concerning the political dynamics in the province.

In a related development, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari confirmed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s delegation had sought PPP’s support for the 27th amendment. This request came after discussions about the amendment’s approval in parliament. The situation highlights ongoing political maneuvering as various parties work to navigate the complex constitutional process.

The federal government has proposed a comprehensive 27th Constitutional Amendment, handing the draft to the PPP for support. The amendment seeks major structural changes in Pakistan’s judiciary, federal-provincial power balance, and financial distribution. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formally requested PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and President Asif Ali Zardari to back the amendment. The government needs a two-thirds parliamentary majority for passage, making PPP’s support crucial. The announcement signals an ambitious move to reshape the country’s governance framework.

The draft aims to remove constitutional protection for provincial shares under the NFC Award. Article 160 and Clause 3A, which guarantee provincial revenue, are targeted. Officials say the move would centralize financial authority in the federal government. Critics warn this could weaken provincial autonomy established by past amendments. Supporters argue it will streamline federal-provincial revenue distribution and improve national financial management.
