Law Minister to Table

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar will present the 27th constitutional amendment bill in the Senate on Monday. The Senate session will begin at 11:00 AM in the Parliament House, Islamabad. Earlier, Senator Farooq H. Naik will present the report of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Law and Justice. The committee’s report reviews the constitutional bill and its approved clauses. The Senate’s approval will pave the way for the bill’s presentation in the National Assembly later today.

After Senate approval, the bill will be tabled in the National Assembly at 4:00 PM. The government aims to pass the amendment swiftly through both houses. Officials said the joint parliamentary committee reviewed the legislation clause by clause during its meeting on Sunday. The committee approved the inclusion of a Federal Constitutional Court clause in the proposed amendment. This clause outlines the structure and role of the new judicial body.

The committee also approved a clause regarding the transfer of judges between courts. Under the clause, a judge who refuses transfer will be considered retired. The retired judge will still receive pension and privileges as per law. This provision aims to ensure transparency and discipline in judicial appointments. Lawmakers expect the amendment to strengthen the judicial system and improve accountability.

Moreover, three allied parties—the ANP, MQM, and BAP—submitted additional amendment proposals. The ANP proposed removing the word “Khyber” from “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa” to rename the province as “Pakhtunkhwa.” The MQM suggested changes related to local councils’ funds, while the BAP sought an increase in seats in the Balochistan Assembly. However, the committee has not reached a final decision on these proposals.

Speaking to reporters, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said discussions on allied parties’ proposals are ongoing. He expressed hope for a breakthrough on the MQM’s amendment regarding local government funds. Consultations also continue on the proposals about the province’s name and Balochistan’s assembly seats. The minister added that the government remains committed to political consensus and legislative progress on the 27th constitutional amendment.
