Lawyers Protest Excavation at Karoonjhar Hills in Tharparkar

The Sindh High Court Bar has written to the Chief Justice about a peaceful protest over excavation activities at Karoonjhar Hills in Tharparkar. The letter outlines plans for a protest march from the Sindh High Court’s parking lot to the Chief Minister’s House. The protesters aim to present their demands to the Chief Minister, urging action to protect the hills from further harm.
The lawyers have demanded that the Sindh government withdraw its appeal filed in the Supreme Court. They are also calling for immediate steps to preserve Karoonjhar Hills, which hold significant cultural and historical value. The protest aims to raise awareness about the ongoing threats to the region, particularly from illegal excavation activities.
In addition to the Sindh High Court Bar’s protest, the Karachi Bar Association has also announced plans to hold a rally on November 26, 2025. The rally will begin at the City Court and proceed to the Governor House, where a general body meeting will be held as part of the protest. The Karachi Bar is also demanding the preservation of Karoonjhar Hills, citing its importance as an ancient heritage site.
Karoonjhar Hills, located in Tharparkar’s desert district, are known for their unique granite rocks and ancient geological significance. The hills are home to various species of animals, birds, and rare creatures, including peacocks and deer. The region is also a vital source of water for both humans and wildlife in Nagarparkar, further emphasizing its environmental importance.
For years, the Karoonjhar Hills have faced threats from illegal excavation, driven by the sale of precious stones. This illegal activity has been facilitated by influential politicians and other groups. Civil society organizations have long campaigned to have the hills declared a world heritage site, aiming to preserve its thousands of years of cultural and environmental history.
