Pakistan Condemns Israeli Attack on Gaza Aid Flotilla, Calls for Release of Humanitarian Workers
Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the recent attack by Israeli forces on the Gaza Sumud Flotilla. The flotilla, consisting of 40 vessels, carried over 450 humanitarian workers from 44 countries. In a social media post on X, Sharif demanded the immediate release of all workers captured by Israel. He said these workers only aimed to deliver aid to the suffering Palestinian people. The prime minister called this act barbaric and urged that it must stop immediately.
The Gaza Sumud Flotilla, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), includes around 500 parliamentarians, lawyers, and activists. Among them is a group from Italy. This flotilla has tried to break Israel’s blockade on Gaza several times. It carried medicine and food to the people there despite repeated Israeli warnings. Organizers said Israel stopped 13 aid boats, sparking international criticism.
Italian labor unions also condemned the attack. The CGIL union called the strike on civilian ships carrying Italians “extremely serious.” Other smaller unions announced they would join the protest. Earlier, a general strike organized by the grassroots Unione Sindacale di Base (USB) on September 22 turned violent in Milan. This protest supported Gaza and the flotilla’s mission.
In Genoa, a city in northwestern Italy, the USB planned to block the port in response. Protesters were called to gather at 10 p.m. near one of the main entrances. The union urged all supporters to join and show solidarity with the humanitarian workers. The strike and port blockade aim to pressure authorities and raise awareness about the situation in Gaza.
Overall, the attack on the Gaza Sumud Flotilla has drawn global attention and sparked protests. Pakistan and Italy are among the countries strongly opposing Israel’s actions. The call for peace and the free flow of humanitarian aid grows louder. Many now demand that aid reaches the people who desperately need it in Gaza.
