Pakistan Makes NEPRA License Mandatory for All Solar Consumers

Pakistan has made a NEPRA license mandatory for all solar consumers under new policy changes. The Ministry of Energy introduced these rules to regulate electricity generation through solar systems. As a result, all users installing solar setups must now obtain a license before operation.

According to sources, consumers will need approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority to generate electricity based on their system capacity. Previously, distribution companies could issue licenses for systems up to 25 kilowatts. However, the new amendments shift this authority entirely to NEPRA.

Furthermore, the updated rules require users to pay licensing fees based on their system load. Consumers must submit a pay order in favor of NEPRA. In contrast, earlier policies allowed free licenses for systems up to 25 kilowatts, making solar adoption easier for small users.

In addition, officials stated that consumers will now pay an extra fee of one thousand rupees per kilowatt. However, the policy includes some flexibility. For instance, users adopting hybrid technology systems will remain exempt from the licensing requirement.

Overall, Pakistan’s decision to make a NEPRA license mandatory for all solar consumers reflects a shift toward stricter regulation. While the move may increase costs, it aims to improve oversight and system management. Therefore, all solar consumers must now comply with NEPRA license rules.
