An important meeting of the Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA) was held in Islamabad under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, where Pakistan’s agricultural performance, food security situation, and future production targets were reviewed in detail.

The minister said that increasing per-acre crop yield is essential to strengthen food security in the country. While overall food availability remains stable, he noted that affordability continues to be a major concern for low-income households.

He highlighted the implementation of the Interim National Wheat Policy 2025–26, approved by the federal cabinet, which aims to support farmers, ensure better wheat production, and attract private investment into the agriculture sector.

The meeting discussed broader reforms under the Prime Minister’s economic transformation agenda, including mechanisation of farming, seed sector reforms, revival of cotton production, value addition in agriculture, improved access to agricultural credit, and promotion of exports.

Officials also presented updates on the establishment of a National Agriculture Trade and Food Safety Authority, which is expected to strengthen quality control standards and improve Pakistan’s competitiveness in global agricultural markets.

The committee reviewed the performance of major Rabi crops, including wheat, potato, onion, tomato, and gram. Wheat production was estimated at 29.31 million tons, while potato and gram recorded significant growth. However, tomato and onion production showed a decline due to reduced cultivated area.

For the upcoming Kharif season, the committee set production targets for key crops, including rice, maize, sugarcane, and cotton, along with other minor crops.

Authorities also briefed the committee on irrigation water availability, seed supply, fertilizer stocks, and agricultural credit. The State Bank of Pakistan projected agricultural lending of over Rs3 trillion for the next fiscal year.

The committee expressed satisfaction over the overall agricultural outlook but stressed stronger coordination among institutions and continued investment in agricultural research to ensure long-term food security and sustainable growth.
