Afghanistan-based terrorism

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar, has warned that terrorism originating from Afghanistan poses a threat to the world. Speaking at a UN Security Council session on Afghanistan, he emphasized that militant groups in Afghanistan are actively planning attacks, including targeting civilians in Pakistan. He stressed that Afghanistan-based terrorism is a danger to global security and requires urgent international attention.

During his address, Asim Iftikhar highlighted that groups like the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), and other extremist organizations are using Afghan territory to organize and coordinate terrorist attacks. He said these groups have carried out suicide attacks in various cities across Pakistan.

The Pakistani envoy mentioned that on February 26, Taliban forces launched unprovoked attacks on Pakistan. Afghan-based militants targeted innocent Pakistani civilians, resulting in significant casualties. In response, Pakistan conducted counter-terrorism operations against the enemy forces, seizing foreign-made weapons and dismantling militant infrastructure.

Asim Iftikhar underscored that Afghanistan has become a safe haven for terrorist groups, which endangers regional and global peace. He emphasized that Pakistan seeks a secure and peaceful Afghanistan and called on the Taliban government to fulfill its responsibility to maintain stability and prevent militant activities.

He further stated that the Afghan Taliban regime is violating the Doha Agreement and that compliance with the agreement is the only way to move forward. He reiterated that Afghanistan-based terrorism is a danger to global security, urging the international community to take coordinated steps to prevent militant groups from using Afghan territory as a base for attacks.
