Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is preparing for the upcoming Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections with party supremo Nawaz Sharif set to personally lead the election campaign and oversee the finalisation of party tickets.

According to party insiders, Nawaz Sharif has completed interviews of candidates seeking party tickets and chaired the parliamentary board meeting held at the PML-N secretariat in Lahore’s Model Town. More than 206 aspirants from 45 constituencies appeared before the board as part of the scrutiny process.

Each candidate was given a brief opportunity to present their case, while Nawaz Sharif and senior party leaders questioned them on party loyalty, political influence and public support in their respective constituencies. The final decision on ticket distribution will be made by Nawaz Sharif, with official announcements expected within the next 30 days.

The PML-N leadership is optimistic about its performance in the upcoming elections, with Nawaz Sharif expressing confidence that the party will form the government in AJK. He reiterated his emotional connection with Kashmir, stating that he considers himself deeply tied to the region and its people.

As part of the election strategy, Nawaz Sharif is scheduled to visit AJK in mid-June to actively participate in the campaign. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz are also expected to join him, addressing public gatherings in different areas to strengthen the party’s outreach.

Party officials said two to three major political rallies are being planned in the region during the campaign period. The leadership has directed all senior figures to mobilise support in line with legal and electoral requirements.

The PML-N has already completed preliminary scrutiny of candidates in most constituencies through its political committee, which held consultations across AJK and with Kashmiri refugee representatives in Pakistan.

The AJK elections are expected to be held in July, marking a key political contest in the region.
