Dr. Arfa Sayeda Zehra Dies

Dr. Arfa Sayeda Zehra, one of Pakistan’s most influential educationists and social reformers, passed away in Lahore on Monday. She was 83 years old. According to her niece, Dr. Arfa will be buried in her family graveyard in Cavalry Ground, Lahore, with funeral timing to be announced later. Her passing marks the loss of a leading voice in education, women’s rights, and public discourse.

Dr. Arfa earned her Ph.D. in History from the University of Hawaiʻi after studying at Lahore College for Women University and Government College University, Lahore. She served as Principal of Lahore College for Women and Government College for Women, Gulberg, before becoming Professor Emeritus at Forman Christian College. Her academic career reflected a lifelong dedication to scholarship and student development.

Specializing in Urdu literature and intellectual history, Dr. Zehra advocated tirelessly for education reform, cultural preservation, and ethical public values. She also held a UNESCO Chair in Cultural Heritage, emphasizing the protection of Pakistan’s intellectual and literary traditions. Through her lectures, writings, and public engagements, she inspired generations to value education, critical thinking, and civic responsibility.

Dr. Zehra also served in public service, including as Special Advisor to the Prime Minister on Education and National Cohesion. She chaired the National Commission on the Status of Women and promoted women’s empowerment and ethical governance. Her bold statements and public advocacy encouraged reflection on social justice, historical awareness, and the importance of education for national development.

Condolences poured in from national leaders. President Asif Ali Zardari called her passing an “irreparable loss” to Pakistan’s academic and literary circles. Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan expressed deep sorrow, noting her work and teachings would continue to inspire future generations. Dr. Arfa Sayeda Zehra’s life and legacy remain a shining example of knowledge, reform, and public service.
