Saudi Arabia has made meningococcal vaccination compulsory for all personnel participating in the 2026 Hajj season as part of expanded health measures aimed at preventing the spread of infectious diseases during the annual pilgrimage.

The announcement was made by Abdulaziz Abdulbaqi, who said the decision was taken following directives from the Supreme Hajj Committee to strengthen health preparedness in crowded pilgrimage areas.

According to the Ministry of Health, the meningococcal vaccine helps protect against serious bacterial infections that can spread quickly in densely populated environments such as Hajj gatherings. Officials said the measure is intended to protect both workers and millions of pilgrims expected to arrive from around the world.

Authorities clarified that the approved vaccine remains valid for five years. Workers who have already received the vaccine within that timeframe will not need an additional dose under current regulations.

The ministry further stated that receiving the vaccine has now become a mandatory requirement for obtaining a Hajj work permit. Personnel have been advised to receive the vaccination at least 10 days before beginning duties to ensure full effectiveness.

In addition to the meningococcal vaccine, Saudi health officials are encouraging workers to complete other recommended immunisations, including seasonal influenza shots and updated COVID-19 booster doses introduced in 2025 to address emerging variants.

The ministry said vaccination services are being provided directly at workplaces through coordination with healthcare providers in security, military, and university institutions to improve access and compliance rates.

Workers have also been instructed to schedule appointments through the Sehhaty app using the Adult Vaccination Clinic service.

Saudi Arabia launches extensive public health preparations months before Hajj each year due to the massive influx of international pilgrims. Vaccination campaigns are considered a critical part of disease prevention and crowd management during one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings.
