Suharto National Hero Proposal

JAKARTA: A proposal to award former Indonesian dictator Suharto the title of national hero has sparked significant opposition. Human rights advocates and civil society groups have strongly criticized the move, calling it a “betrayal.” Suharto, who ruled Indonesia for over 30 years, passed away in 2008, but his controversial legacy is still debated today.

Suharto’s regime, which began in 1967, was marked by allegations of corruption, violent crackdowns on political dissent, and severe human rights abuses. Activists argue that elevating him to national hero status would disregard the suffering of his victims and the democratic values Indonesia has worked hard to uphold since his fall from power in 1998.

On Tuesday, around 500 activists, academics, and civil society members sent a letter to President Prabowo Subianto, urging him not to proceed with Suharto’s nomination. The letter condemned the decision, claiming it would dishonor the victims of Suharto’s regime and distort Indonesia’s history for future generations.

Prabowo, who is also Suharto’s son-in-law, is responsible for reviewing the shortlist of national heroes. While the final list will be decided by November 10, the proposal to honor Suharto has sparked heated debate. Human rights groups like Amnesty International have expressed concerns that Suharto’s nomination would contradict the values of justice and morality that should define a national hero.

Amnesty’s executive director, Usman Hamid, emphasized that the law requires national heroes to embody values of moral integrity and social justice. According to Hamid, Suharto’s history of human rights violations contradicts these values, making him an unsuitable candidate for the honor. The controversy surrounding Suharto’s nomination highlights the ongoing struggle over Indonesia’s historical narrative and its commitment to human rights.
