TLP Protests Killed 11 Police

LAHORE – October 16, 2025: The Punjab police have released detailed figures outlining the casualties and damage caused during protests by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) from 2016 to 2025.

The report states that 11 police officers lost their lives, while 1,648 were injured in various violent clashes with TLP demonstrators over the past nine years. Among the injured, 69 officers suffered permanent disabilities, 202 sustained serious injuries, and 1,194 incurred minor wounds. The report also confirmed the deaths of 16 civilians and injuries to 54 others during these confrontations.

In addition to human losses, the protests caused significant property damage. Police records show that 97 police vehicles were destroyed completely, two were set ablaze, and 10 police buildings were heavily damaged.

Law enforcement authorities have filed 305 cases under anti-terrorism laws and 480 under other criminal charges linked to TLP protests. Recent investigations have named 1,529 suspects, with more than 17,800 unidentified individuals also booked in connection with the violence.

The report highlights that TLP protesters often resorted to stone-pelting and, in some cases, gunfire against police forces.

Earlier today, the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, approved a package of strict measures aimed at restoring law and order in the province. In a high-level security meeting, the government resolved to recommend a federal ban on extremist groups involved in inciting violence and hatred.

The new policy includes immediate arrests of individuals involved in hate speech and unlawful activities, with those responsible for the deaths of police officers and destruction of public property to be prosecuted in anti-terrorism courts.

According to police sources, the violence erupted when protesters refused to move their demonstration to a less disruptive location despite repeated instructions. The crowd reportedly used stones, spiked sticks, and petrol bombs, and even snatched weapons from officers, later using them for open firing.

Post-mortem reports confirmed that the bullets which caused the officer’s death were fired from weapons taken from police personnel.
